About Me + CV

Hello! I’m Emily, a writer and artist based in the UK.

By day, I work for a hospice charity as a Digital and Communications Officer.

I was previously a journalist for several years, specialising in culture, society, heritage and news for printed publications and online.

I also have a doctorate from the University of Sussex. Touching on the medical humanities, art history, and literary analysis, my research looked at the creative work produced by mental health patients for ‘asylum’ magazines (what I termed “patient publications”) in the long nineteenth century. The title of my thesis is ‘Patients’ creative work and “expressive possibilities” in New Moon, Under the Dome and The Hydra, 1844-1918’.

My other research interests include the long nineteenth century and Neo-Victorianism in literature, art, and the archives, whether it’s ‘asylums’ or activism, science or the supernatural – and particularly when these intersect with folklore or cabaret or horror.

I am also the owner of Little Violet Hours, an art shop offering original work, stickers, logo design, portraits, and all sorts of commission work. Check out my store here, and please get in contact if you’d like to talk about a potential project.

If you’d like to read more about my work and qualifications, please take a look at my CV (below).

Thanks for stopping by!
