Recently, I’ve been working as the project researcher for the Tremletts Chemist history project.
If you’re local to Portsmouth, UK – my hometown and the city where I live – you may already know the Tremletts name.
For more than 100 years, Tremletts Chemist was a family-run business at the heart of community pharmacy in Portsmouth. Started by Perceival Gordon Tremlett in 1901, three generations of the Tremlett family built the business from the flagship Fratton Road pharmacy to 11 stores in the local area.
In 2026, Portsmouth is marking 100 years since it was officially granted city status. As part of these celebrations, Portsmouth History Centre and the Tremletts family are researching the history of the popular chemist – and I’ve got on board to help with this project.
We’re looking for memories from staff, customers, and anyone who was part of the Tremletts community.

You can share your memories via our survey here:
I’ll be posting all our findings on our blog page. You can keep up with the latest news here: tremlettschemist.wordpress.com
